Lying down shot is good.

To improve
- Sound editing needs to be smoothed out between transitions and levels.
- Voice over should be fixed.

Second teacher feedback:
WWW
- Good acting.
- Framing is nice.
- Good variety of shots.
- Like the idea of jolly music... Could also use non dietetic sound to signify the massive tonal shift.

To improve:
- Walking shot with titles feels slightly off.
- Lighting/brightness not good in a walking scene.

Marketing Campaign

How we are going to promoted our film

To market our film in the most successful way possible we have taken many different approaches to ensure it is promoted correctly to our target audience. Listed below are the different ways we are promoting our film:

Below- the line -marketing:

  • We will be using Social media to target our secondary target audience young adults this is because many of them use social media so if we have social media accounts like twitter, facebook and instagram ,this will be free advertising that we can use to capture their attention on wanting to watch the film.
  • Radio & press interviews are free advertising which we will be using to promote the film to our target audience sand also not necessarily our target audience but are interested in the film therefore causing a bigger profit of viewings.
  • Email Marketing.

Through-the-line marketing:

  • We will use Ads on the main channels on freeview for example channel 4, ITV. This is so it will reach our target audience of the middle age category, this could also possible attract other audiences that are not our target audience and therefore boost our viewings because it will be driving direct contact with new customers.
  • Magazines will be a good way to promote our film because especially women still read magazines and if there is a page in the magazine dedicated to our film this will catch their eye, we thought this would be the best way to promote to this target audience because they may not use social media as much as the younger generation
Above-the-line marketing :
  • Billboards are above the line marketing and we will be using this for passing by on lookers such as people getting on public transport on their way and from work. The reason we choose this type of marketing is because our target audience is the middle age and intellectual so will most like to work in the city which means they will be using public transport to commute to work

Filming Reflection: How did it go? What went well? How could it have gone better?

Music research ideas

Music ideas for our film opening.

In today's lesson I did research on the music we are going to have in the background of our film opening. We as a team have decided to have instrumental music in the background to add effect on our film opening, the reason we have chosen not to have music with lyrics is because the audience may become slightly distracted of what is being said in the music instead of what is happening in the film opening. We also choose to have instrumental music because it fits the genre of our film which is a drama, so therefore it needs to be contemporary.

This is a video that i found that has similar music that we want ours to be similar too.

When our main character is walking down the street with his headphones, this will be the music what he will be listening to. This will be played over the footage so its clear as possible, could possible count as follige.

Production Diary

Production Diary
 10/11/15
Day 1 10/11/15: On the first day we were assigned our groups and had a short introduction session, telling each other a brief overview of ourselves and the ideas that we had for our movies. We all introduced an idea separately and then discussed what we thought was good and bad about all the ideas and started to consider which one we would pick. We came down too two separate ideas but where then stuck as of which one too chose as we all thought that the ideas were both good. At the end o the lesson, we left considering a movie and keeping one o the ideas as a back-up.

Day 2 11/11/15: Continuing on from the first day, we started taking bigger considerations for the first idea 'Life' and planning out what would happen in the movie while creating the film pitch presentation. However, we began running into problems with the idea and so took the initiative of presenting the pitches in front of a critical audience to have them decide whether or not the back-up idea 'MiddleMan' was as good or better than the 'Life' idea. We began creating alternate presentations for the ideas in preparation for presenting them.

Day 3 12/11/15:On Day 3, we presented the separate ideas and had the audience vote on the what they thought would be the better of the two to watch. The audience decided that 'MiddleMan' had the better enigma created and was also a more original idea. As a group, we then decided that we would use the back-up instead.

Day 4 13/11/15: We began by planning out the basics of the opening scene and plotting what would happen in it. We also began planning out actors that would play roles in the opening scene, considering what kind of audience we were targeting and how to make the scene look natural in the normal world.

Day 5 16/11/15: We finished the basis for the storyboard while continuing on from the previous session. We had to overcome the issue of ending it without making it seem like a trailer however we believe that we have overcome this efficiently and effectively. Furthermore, we forward planned for our roles, deciding who was going to do what role and beginning our designated tasks. We also began creating the moodboard.

Day 6 17/11/15: On this day, we began to create the script for the opening scene, using the storyboard that we created as an influence for the timings and the actions that he would do. We also finished our target audience so that we had a good idea of who to appeal to with our marketing and script and choose what would fit well and what we could add as extras to the opening scene to further enhance the experience for that audience. The moodboard was also enhanced and improved further by fleshing out various key aspects like character, scenes, settings, films. We also began exploring the representations present in the opening scene including the fact that the general working man was stereotyped as the main character.

Day 7 18/11/15: On Day 7, we recorded our storyboard and began the editing process to piece it together. We also created our risk assessment, covering what could happen during filming. Costume and make-up design was also covered on this day as we planned out what the main character and extras would wear. We also began research for the location of shooting. The prop list was also completed stating items we would need and online stores that we can purchase them from.

Day 8 20/11/15: We began researching music ideas on this day to attempt to find the right music for both the main character to listen to and too play in the background. Furthermore we re-recorded our storyboard due to an issue with a member not being present who had the previous audio clips. The conventions, genre and audience were also linked to the opening scene and analysed how they fit together.

Day 9 23/11/15: Today we checked over the script for the opening scene and created the 'dialogue' scene for the main character as well as starting the movie's poster design for the marketing campaign. Furthermore we also continued the music research for the opening scene.

Day 10 24/11/15: On this day we evaluated our storyboard and also tested shots for actual filming as too train ourselves in different techniques and to see what worked and what didn't. Furthermore we also continued editing together our recorded storyboard against the images and completed it on this day.

Day 11 25/11/15: We began filming on this day and were able to get many shots required for including the titles. Many of the shots we got were 'filler' shots and will most likely not be used in the final cut of the opening scene. We did this to make sure that we had plenty of good shots for the opening scene and that we could pick and choose during the editing process. Furthermore we also did the interviews for use on the website that we also began to create for the marketing campaign.

Day 12 26/11/15: On day 12, we began the editing process for the shots that we collected, attempting to link them together in a correlated style that made sense. We also began adding the titles into the shots we had. The movie poster was also enhanced, using the actual actor as the main focus of it to make it more realistic to an actual movie poster.

Day 13 27/11/15: Today we rethought our project and changed our plan, scrapping our original footage and decided to re-film everything using a different actor but very similar storyboard and basic layout of what happens in the opening scene. We began planning out what would happen in the new opening scene on this day as well.

Day 14 30/11/15: We continued planning out the shot list and locations on this day as well as discussing the extra changes that had to be made to make the opening scene filming work and that the day of filming would run smoothly and that we could gain all the shots we needed so that we did not have to return when conditions were not similar or optimal.

Day 15 1/12/15: On this day, we filmed our 2nd draft of the opening scene, spending the entire day collecting footage for the editing process to attempt to create a better opening scene than the first draft. Once we were finished we then correlated our footage together and decided what footage to use and what to scrap.

Day 16 2/12/15: Today we began the editing process with the footage we had decided to use and put it into the editing software. We cut and cropped footage together to make the footage look more like an actual opening scene and also added in titles to some of the shots although it was mostly experimentation at this point. We also began writing the script for the internal monologue scene.

Day 17 4/12/15: We recorded and added in the internal monologue into the first draft today to complete the edit for the first draft. We also continued adding titles on this day, experimenting with different effects to have them come in. We also began updating the 'paperwork' of the project to make it fit the change in the movie idea.

Day 18 7/12/15: Today, we provided, and were provided responses from our peers to assist us in creating our movie and how to improve it later on.

Day 19 8/12/15: We continued providing feedback today and continued the editing process to respond to the recommendations given so far by the feedback provided. Some members also continued providing helpful assistance to other groups.

Day 20 9/12/15: In continued response to feedback, on this day we filmed once again in an attempt to get more 'filler' footage as well as more close-up shots to make the opening scene better and shorten scenes by splitting it up. This went well as we were able to collect all the footage that we wanted to get. We then uploaded the footage and began editing the footage into the 2nd draft.

Day 21 10/12/15: On this day we continued the editing process of the opening scene, adding in the new footage to the older footage.

Day 22 11/12/15: Work continued on the editing process on this day, with a focus being placed upon the audio aspects. We attempted to smooth out the audio transitions throughout the opening scene to make sure that it did not ruin the immersion of the audience.

Day 23 14/12/15: We spent this day smoothing out the opening scene, attempting to remove any defects from the movie and trying to get it to as close to perfection as possible. We then uploaded the movie to be ready to be viewed.

Day 24 15/12/15: After finishing our editing, we continued to update the paperwork related to the opening scene to make sure that the opening scene was supported and evidence was shown of our work to complete it.

Day 25 16/12/15: On this day, we continued to update the paperwork related to the movie as well as provide peer assessment to each other about our individual blogs.

Location shots

These are the location shots of where we shot the opening of our film delusion. We choose these areas because they fitted into our theme of a frantic/ busy city. In theses shots our main character is walking on their way to work.

Target audience for Middle Man

Audience
Primary Audience
The primary audience of the movie is the middle aged and intellectual thinkers of all ages as the basis for the story is morbid and questions life after death and so requires thought around the subject. This is why this is the primary audience as these people are experienced with not only life but have most likely come across death throughout they lives and so will be able to connect with the main character. Furthermore, intellectual thinkers will be able to understand the aspects of the movie and the meanings and motives behind why the main character is still alive.
Secondary Audience
The secondary audience is focused on the main film going audience of people aged between 16 and 24 as this is the largest audience that is likely to attend the film merely to see the film and is an audience that does not require any specializations as it encompasses such a large amount of people. Furthermore, due to the younger ages present, it may interest them as the topic of death may be something that they are uncommon or inexperienced in and so it will act as an introduction to the topic with the themes of the movie.

Moodboard Of Initial Ideas for middle man

Here is our Initial idea of what is going to look like. We have created our mood board with a very visual aspect so people can see how it is going to look like and turn out like. Although it says that this is for the film MiddleMan, obviously in the end we decided to change the idea of the name and the characters who were playing each part. However in the character change we still wanted the main character to be a business type person who works in the city, however we chose to do a female character instead of a male.

Class feedback and peer assessment on film pitch

When we pitched our film to the class, the students all had sheets which they had to give their constructive criticism and tell us what was good and what wasn't good about our film idea.
In hindsight, I feel that a lot of the responses were very positive, we didn't really have anyone slating our idea saying it is rubbish.

The first question to the mark sheet was:

What is the genre? Is this clear?

A lot of the results were very accurate but the responses were varied. The result which was most common was a thriller/mystery, I feel that this is due to the whole story being quite eerie and very odd. We also received
results such as 'Drama' and 'Psychological'.

Who is the target audience and why would they pay to see it?
Most of the results that we received stated that middle aged and cultured intellectuals will prefer to see this film. To be honest, this makes sense because this film will involve a lot of thinking. Also, a lot of the other responses were just simply anyone who is interested in films that make you think.

Does the mood and style fit?
The majority of the responses all explained how the dead man is shown which creates the intriguing enigma. I agree with this statement because that was our intentional idea in the first place, to create a nice amount of flowing enigma throughout the start of the opening scene.

One response which really caught my eye stated "Mood with rain and pathetic fallacy is a good idea" because this shows that they reflect the attitude of the scene. For example, it is stereotypical movies to have rain in sad/depressing scenes.

Lastly, some people said that the main character is clueless and selfish between life and death. This is interesting because the initial enigma created just from this presentation suggests that this character is resisting himself into going to life after death.

Narrative interesting? Enigma?

The responses show that the narrative is interesting. For example people said that the opening scene will be left on a cliffhanger. However, some people said that the narrative is minimal due to the character, "we don't know what will happen to him." But overall most people said that there is good elements of enigma. For example, people want to know how the character changes and develops.

The last thing which was mentioned was that the voice over is interesting, this is helpful to us because we wasn't sure whether this idea was good or not.

What films is it similar too?
A lot of people said this film was a very original idea, this will help us in sustaining our originality marks within the preliminary. The only thing that people said it was similar too was that it was quite similar to the 'Day i died' music video. Therefore, our advice was to make sure we do not make it look like a music video and keep with film.

Comments/Advice
Overall, a lot of people liked the credits idea and they said that is a good, original idea. On the other hand, a lot of people didn't know where we were going to film, so this meant we didn't explain where our locations will be. This is true because we didn't really mention where our locations will be purely because we haven't yet picked where we are going to film.

On a lighter note, mostly everyone said that this is going to be a very good film opening if we can pull it off. The reason why people said that is going to be hard to pull it off is purely because it is going to be very hard to compose. I feel that sound, body language and facial expressions are going to be crucial if we are going to compose to create a successful opening scene.  Here are example of reviews from our classmates, as you can see they spent a lot of detail into their feedback which we are very grateful of because we can use this feedback to create and improve our idea which should help us access the grades we all want.

Titles Task

In today's lesson I was taught how the text which appears in the opening credits of a film  has very specific order and rules that follow them. For example the main actors are at the start of the film credits and with the director being last.

Initial Pitch and Presentation

Powered by emaze
This is my film pitch idea, in our next lesson we will all do a presentation to our group and we will discus what we liked about each others film pitch and what we would like to include in our opening scene.

Film analysis

In today's lesson, I learnt about sound and the effects of sound in films and TV programmes. The different types of sound that we were taught about are:
1. Diegetic - anything that the actors can hear (e.g. radio, cars)
2. Non-diegetic - anything that the actors cannot hear (e.g. voice over)
3. Synchronous - matched with the visible source of the sound on the screen.
4. Asynchronous - not matched with the visible source of the sound on the screen.
5. Sound bridge - blending two scenes together by sound.
6. Ambient - the surrounding sounds that create the atmosphere and creates soundscape.

Also in class we had to evaluate and analyse several film openings which were made by past students, these are what i thought went well in the film and what needs to be improved
